La música rock y pop de los 80 tendría un gran año en 1989 para cerrar la década, pero su legado e influencia quedaría hasta nuestros días, este año trajo canciones muy buenas para cerrar una década de cambios, una década única para quienes disfrutaron de su niñez, adolescencia y juventud, pero también para quienes gustaban y gustan aún de la música rock y afines.
1989 fue el año en que Paul McCartney vuelve a dar conciertos después de más de una década sin haberlo hecho, también fue un año espectacular musicalmente para Madonna, pero en su vida personal no tanto así, pues se divorciaría del gran actor Sean Penn luego de tres años y medio de matrimonio. Este año fue para Michael Jackson el año en que lo nombrarían por primera vez como "El Rey del Pop" en la ceremonia de los premios Soul Train Heritage Awards(Premios para la música negra, que toma el nombre de un programa llamado Soul Train).
Al igual que muchos otro Ringo Starr, el ex-beatle, forma su agrupación propia llamada Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band en el mes de julio.
Tras algunos cambios trascendentales en la Unión Soviética, se realiza en Moscú el Festival de
Paz y Música, los días 11 y 12 de Agosto de 1989, contando con la actuación de bandas aclamadas como Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Cinderella, y Scorpions.
Muchos de esos cambios traen como consecuencia o llegan de algún modo a su punto álgido cuando el 9 de noviembre de este año cae el Muro de Berlín.
